About Duluth Hardwood Floors
Duluth Hardwood Floors is a locally owned hardwood flooring contractor serving Duluth, Minnesota and the Twin Ports. We refinish, repair and restore the hardwood in this region's older homes, because that is what the housing stock here actually needs.
Most of this city was built before 1940, the bulk of it between the 1890s and the 1920s while the ore and shipping trade was at its peak, and it was floored with what was moving through the port at the time. Red oak, hard maple and Douglas fir all turn up, often in the same house, with oak in the rooms guests saw and fir upstairs where it would not be.
What makes this region different is not just the age of the wood, it is the climate working on it. Lake Superior drives an annual humidity swing wider than almost anywhere else these floors could be. Boards shrink through a long dry heating season and swell again in summer. Old foundations under old houses push moisture up into the subfloor. Cupping is the most common failure we see, and it is the one most often made worse by someone sanding a floor flat before finding out why it moved.
So we meter before we sand, we identify species before we quote, and we will tell you when a screen and recoat is the right answer instead of the more expensive job. Floors in these houses have a finite number of sandings in them and we would rather not spend yours unnecessarily.
