Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Two Harbors, MN

Two Harbors is the county seat of Lake County and a working iron ore shipping port, population 3,633, up the North Shore from Duluth. The ore docks built the town and its housing dates largely from that period.

The distinguishing factor for floors here is the lake, and more of it than Duluth gets. Two Harbors sits right on the shore with less city between the housing and the water, which sharpens both ends of the annual humidity cycle: drier through a long heating season, damper through the summer.

Solid wood responds to that by moving more. Winter seams open wider and close harder in July than they would inland. The practical consequence is the same rule as everywhere on this shore but it matters more here: do not fill a gap in February. When the boards expand in summer there is nowhere for them to go, the filler is crushed out, and the seam ends up worse than it started. We fill at the shoulder of the season or we leave seasonal movement alone and explain why.

It is also an argument for finish choice rather than a preference. A floor going through a bigger dimensional cycle wants a finish that flexes with it, which is one of the reasons we generally recommend water-based polyurethane on this shore. See sanding and refinishing for how the finishes differ.

Two Harbors is a longer run from Duluth at about twenty-seven miles, so we schedule North Shore work together where we can. Call (218) 555-0164.
