Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Cloquet, MN
Cloquet is the largest city in Carlton County, the largest of the Carlton County towns, about twenty miles southwest of Duluth. It is a mill town, and its housing has a distinct age profile from Duluth's for a specific historical reason: most of the town burned in the 1918 fire and was rebuilt afterwards.
That gives Cloquet a housing stock heavily weighted to the 1920s rather than spread across the 1890s to 1920s the way Duluth's is. In flooring terms that is still firmly old-growth territory. Red oak, hard maple and Douglas fir, milled from the forests that were feeding the mills here, laid in houses built all at once by people who had just lost everything and were not economising on structure.
Practically, floors here are frequently on their first or second refinish rather than their third or fourth, which matters more than it sounds. A solid floor has three to five sandings in it across its whole life. A Cloquet floor often still has budget left, which means a full sand and refinish is a reasonable use of it rather than a last resort.
The moisture picture is the same as everywhere in this region. Long dry heating seasons, humid summers, and older basements pushing moisture up into the subfloor. Cupping is the failure to watch for, and we meter before we sand.
