Seasonal gapping is cosmetic and self-correcting. Cupping is not. Older Lakeside houses on stone or block basements with no vapour barrier under the first floor get a permanent moisture gradient through the floor assembly, and the edges lift. That is the failure worth catching early, and it is the one where sanding the floor flat before it dries makes everything worse.
